Pretty sure it's largest fresh water lake by volume, not absolute largest. Wilhelm Ritter 01:24, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
A nice sample of pro-Chinese propaganda. Please eliminate irredentist overtones. -- Ghirla -трёп- 11:46, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
We need a new photo. Some newspaper wrote the lake is now just a desert like lake Aral, lake CHad. -- Tamás Kádár 16:22, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
Does anybody know the meaning of Balkhash ? It may help to understand the history of the lake.
These NASA satellite photos show the rapid melting of the lake over one week in 2003. Tried adding but currently the article seems overloaded with content.
The photos really demonstrate the ice and melting of the lake. -- Lukemcurley ( talk) 09:20, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

What does "the Gulf Karashagan" mean? To my knowledge there is no such body of water as the Gulf of Karashagan or the Karashagan Gulf; "the Gulf Karashagan" is not a possible construction in the English language. 173.88.246.138 ( talk) 02:56, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
In the article I assert that:
"Beginning in 1759, the lake marked the northwesternmost limit of Qing suzerainty as recognized by the Qing and Russians. In 1864, the lake and its neighboring area were ceded to the Russian Empire under the Treaty of Tarbagatai. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the lake became part of Kazakhstan."
Specifically which portion of the text is controversial - and what sources suggest that it is false? Please note that I state "limit of Qing suzerainty" rather than frontier or border. The nature of their control was fluid in this region, but the Qing state exercised authority in these regions in the form of tax collection, gathering oaths of allegiance from Kazakh tribes, and maintaining military posts. After looking around I found Jin Noda's book The Kazakh Khanates between the Russian and Qing Empires : Central Eurasian International Relations during the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries to be an excellent source for understanding the topic.
Please present a different source here before reverting the edit again - I do not consider a paradox forums post the be compelling as anyone can write whatever they want with no oversight. HaileJones ( talk) 13:29, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
I think that Qing China never held authority over modern-day south-eastern Kazakhstan. Qing China's borders were very fluid and diffused. Additionally, they weren't as solid as other European countries. However, most westerners disagree with me and claim that regions like Almaty where part of the Xinjiang province. This is clearly false, as Almaty was always under Uly zhuz(senior horde). I think this claim facilitates Chinese propaganda and shouldn't be boldly mentioned in Wikipedia to all the world.
Hence, I would like to reach to a conclusion that nobody directly controlled lake Balkhash and its surrounding lands(ie Almaty) from the 18th century up until treaty of Tarbagatai. This is because:
1) borders around that region were diffuse and fluid 2) it is unclear who exercised their authority on that region be it Kazakhs or Qing China. PurpleRequiem ( talk) 10:22, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
