A glacial ice dam broke because of a receding glacier. This reversed the dam formation during the "last mini ice age" a long time ago. The water going into the lake through Slim's River (and onto the Bering Straight through the Yukon) is now headed to the Pacific directly west. This happened over a few days a couple years ago. Authorities are waiting to "see what will happen." (We know what will happen. It will go back to previous levels which was very low.) --

Did I imagine it, or did I see an information board on the lake shore claiming that until a relatively short time ago – centuries rather than millennia – the lake used to drain southwards into the Gulf of Alaska before geology conspired to block the outlet? This being independent of the Slim's River business, which happened a couple of years before I visited those parts.
