I created this article using all the sources I could access in English (which was essentially the Young Article, the Cole article and the findagrave page in the references/bibliography). However, for some parts, particularly the bits before and after the embassy of 1860, I had to rely on the Japanese page for information. If someone has access to the Wert book and the Doi book, I'd be very grateful if they could add sources from there for those sections.
I've now sourced most of the unsourced claims from the additional sources listed (Fukuzawa's autobiography mainly, also the Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japan). I've also removed material sourced solely from the (largely unsourced) Japanese page, except for the precise birth and death dates.
