Kathleen Winifred Hughes wasn't Irish but English. She was born on September 8th, 1926 in
Middlesbrough. Her interest in Irish history started with her PhD thesis about
Finnian of Clonard. At that time she also traveled to Ireland and started to learn
Old and
Middle Irish. You will find all this in the cited book edited by Dorothy Whitelock et al: Ireland in Early Mediaeval Europe: Studies in Memory of Kathleen Hughes. --
