AleatoryPonderings: The 172 March date was in the article at the start, with the (not 100% reliable) reference to the Irish Independent interview, which doesn't actually state it directly.
Bloom6132 added a reference to The Telegraph, which I can't access; perhaps they could recheck? There's also a new Times obituary
[1], but that's also paywalled. Given that Whitehorn worked for The Observer, one would have thought that their obituary would be likely to be correct.

And though The Times is behind a paywall, the Google search says it contains "CBE, journalist and agony aunt, was born on March 2, 1928". Guess it's safe to say that March 2 is the correct date of birth. —
