According to BBC, clouds get blocked by the surrounding mountains, so it doesn't rain here. Then, where does the water come from? Also, it's been around for millions of years. According to the German article, new science says that it is not an impact crater but a tectonic fault. The quote with references:
Neuere Untersuchungen zeigen jedoch, dass es sich tatsächlich um einen durch Extensionsbewegungen entstandenen tektonischen Graben handelt. [1] Rezent befindet sich das Grabensystem in NW-SE gerichteter transtensionaler Ausdehnung. [2]
