This article appears to need extensive restructuring in the light of the information in Littlewood K. (1999) National Library of Wales Journal Rhymney's Egyptian revival images and interpretations of the Bute Ironworks, Cyf.31, rh. Haf. [1]. Macculloch should also be considered as an architect and civil engineer and his apparent association with the Playfair family, and possibly James Playfair, the architect, may explain why he chose to build an ironworks in Egyptian revival style for the Marquis of Bute.
