Sellwood's career does not appear to have been affected by war service at all. In 1939 Geelong's season was finished before WW2 was declared. He played all games in 1940, so war had no effect there, in 1941 he missed one game due to influenza and played all matches for the rest of that season. In 1942-43 Geelong did not play in the VFL - however, the VFL provided special permits so players could join other clubs - 18 of Sellwood's teammates did so, therefore he could have done so as well. In 1944 Sellwood was injured in a pre-season match, but returned seven weeks into season and played right through. In 1945 Sellwood was injured in the first match and immediately retired.
