WP apparently describes all persons selected for astronaut training as "astronauts" in the lede sections of their articles. Even the first sentence of the article on
Duane Graveline, who famously resigned too soon to make the group photo (two months after his selection), reads, "Duane Edgar "Doc" Graveline (March 2, 1931 – September 5, 2016) was an American physician and NASA astronaut."

Would be interesting to get the opinions of astronauts who have actually flown about this practice. Could you be a skydiver if you completed training but never jumped?
