Middle name
I've read sources that state that Timberlake's middle name began with an R, an H and now an "A". If anyone can gather more information that pinpoints this discrepancy, it would be greatly appreciated.

DarthBotto: The 1880 census shows James R. Timberlake as the 35-year old proprietor of a hotel in Liberty, along with his 27-year old wife Kate. So that's definitely him. But is it correct? The 1870 census for Liberty throws a twist, as it has 24-year old Julius R. Timberlake, a farmer, living with his farmer (dad I would assume) John. I can't read John's wife's name, but it definitely isn't Patsy. Ancestry transcribes it as Essenor, but I'm not 100% on that. Interestingly, there appears to be a 60-year old mixed race couple a few lines up ... but I digress. My conclusion it's probably R., but more research is necessary. That's all that easily pops out - I'll dig deeper when I've got more time.

In the 1850 census is James R Timberlake, age 5, son of John and Martha living in Platte, Missouri, with 6 brothers and sisters and 1 12-year old black slave girl. Also there in 1860 as just "James" age 14 in school, and gosh 3 more siblings ... and the househould includes a 25-year old teacher and a 114 year-old (that's what it says) black free women (Mariah Hughes) from Virginia) but no mother, and 3 black and 1 mulatto slave -looks like the now 22-year old has been joined by a 19-year old mulatto male and she has 2 kids (3 and 5). Oh here's a good one, he's listed at
findagrave.com which references a February 20, 1891 Kansas City Star obituary and a Feb 22 Leavenworth Times - middle initial R. in both. If nothing else that's two good references (both referencing Jesse James death). The 1850/1860 have enough siblings to confirm that 1870 is really him. No birth, marriage, or death info - though there is the 1871 death of Essenor in Clay county. And just as I'm about to give up, there is 42 pages of Probate Case files from 1891 in Libery of James R Timberlake of Clay County listing all his realestate, possessions, appraisal ... oh and cute, the creditors get all the money, legal, accounting fees, the funeral, burial, and doctor's bill exactly matches his net worth. There's not actually anything to connect this James R. Timberlake in a process beginning in July 1891 (and running through 1894) to the one who allegedly died February 1891, this town of 2,500. Though the 1880 census lists over 3,000 people, and only two have the surname Timberlake. Seems little doubt he was known as James R. Timberlake. Where does it cross from sourcing to original research. Probably best path forward is to confirm those two obituaries and use that.
