The author of this article has done a great service by bringing the name of James Hackett, master shipbuilder, out of the archives. For that I am very grateful as he was truly a remarkable man. However, in doing so, the author has also perpetuated an error that was made by others in the 20th century who confused the name of James Hackett, the shipbuilder, with James K. Hackett, the actor. James Hackett, the subject of this article, is my 6th great-grandfather. At this time, I have copies of every known deed in his name, a copy of his birth record, a copy of his obituary, copies of various news articles written about him in the Portsmouth, NH newspaper praising his shipbuilding skills, copies of correspondence between him and the War Department (later the Department of the Navy) during his shipbuilding career, and copies of letters to and from him. Contemporaries citing him, including NH Governor John Langdon, did not address him with a middle initial of "K". None of these documents includes a middle name or initial, and none of his signatures included a middle name or initial. The article cited as a source of the author's information does not include a middle initial or name because Mr. Kerr also was unable to find documented proof for the "K". I need help correcting this error before it is perpetuated further. Please give this great man the respect he earned and identify him by his correct name: James Hackett, without the "K". I think the way to do this is to create a new page that will be simply James Hackett (shipbuilder), to port the contents of this page into that, and to go into the referring pages (which were mostly the ships he constructed--those were the ones I could find) and make the necessary link changes. Without reference pages, this one (with the K) will go away and the proper one will take its place. I'll try to do that today. THANKS! for the clarification.
