As a Cub Scout, Howes' Pack visited Friendship Airport, as it was then called, now BWI. They toured a parked Martin 404 airliner and saw its cockpit. He was smitten, and wanted to be a pilot and be around airports. Scouting really helped put him start on his career path towards Air Force ROTC and flying. —
