Adding "British" and "Irish" to "unionist" and "nationalist" in an Irish context, such as here, is not necessary and can be misleading. In Irish politics or history, "nationalist" is always understood as Irish nationalist. In theory, yes, English or Scottish unionists are also nationalists, but the term is never used. And there is no danger of the word being interpreted as Basque nationalist etc. On the other hand, "British" can be read as "from the island of Britain". This is very often not intended by the sentence, which may mean unionists from Northern Ireland and/or unionists from Britain (and/or unionists from the Republic).
