The former lede for this article was ambiguously written, stating that Blitch was the first woman to successfully run for office from Georgia, which was not cited, and I cannot find sources that validate it. I changed the lede to emphasize her (also very impressive) status as the fourth woman to hold office in US Congress. If anyone has a good source for her being the first woman to hold state office in Georgia, please add and revise the lede. (

She also campaigned for Jimmy Carter in 1976, so I would assume she didn't remain a Republican for very long.
