I began this article in a fit of enthusiasm for all things Powell. The Google Books sources on the early history of the museum supplied most of the modified text for the article. The two Ill. State U. pieces get into Powell's influence, support, looting the collections for his new job at the Smithsonian, and finally returning some of the collection. I'm having a hard time finding sources for the closing of the museum which seems to have had most of its collection transferred to what is now the Field Museum.
