Bitumen and Petroleum in Antiquity. Brill Archive.
The article currently states that wells were dug in China in the 300s "had depths of up to about 800 feet (240 m) and were drilled using bits attached to bamboo poles." While it seems entirely possible that oil was collected in China around this time, the depth seems extreme given the technology available at the time, and the limited uses for oil known then. Are there better sources that have more detailed information on oil in ancient China? Dialectric ( talk) 15:08, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
Are we sure it's not the river Pinarus (where the battle of Issus took place) and Issus is the village? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.228.187.106 ( talk) 12:17, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
It might be of interest to mention the oil wells in Alsace. The 1880 NYTime article "The oil wells in Alsace: A discovery made more than a century ago" is very interesting Gregopim ( talk) 12:06, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
