I have removed the following introduction and Background section from the article, because this article is only for the history of the region, not its geographic minutiae. I have copied the removed text here to encourage visibility of it, much of which seems to be good information that could be integrated into a new
Geography of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands article or
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands itself, or other places.
Presently the
UK Government is preparing its submission to the
UN of detailed
geological and
geophysical surveys in order to extend the
continental shelf outer limit up to 350 nmi (650 km) from the shoreline of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands in accordance with the provisions of the
1982UN Law of the Sea Convention. The Government of South Georgia would have the exclusive right of exploiting any natural resources such as
minerals,
natural gas and
oil that might be discovered in the annexed seabed. [1]
The line "...Sir Ernest Shackleton (d. 1922) whose British Antarctic Expedition (1908-09) established the route to the South Pole subsequently followed by Roald Amundsen..." is contradicted in
Amundsen's South Pole expedition, which states "...Scott could follow the known route up the Beardmore Glacier to the Antarctic Plateau, which had been scouted by Ernest Shackleton in 1908, while Amundsen would have to find his way through unknown territory to the Pole." I think this article is incorrect and should reflect the Amundson article. Cheers, Mark
