Disease Diagnosis
From what I have gleaned, the subject most likely had ALS or spinal muscular atrophy. "Muscle disease is considered possible, but motor neuron disease - either amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or spinal muscular atrophy - seems to be the most convincing diagnosis."

I'm not sure if the illustration given in the article is of
Hermann of Carinthia or it is of
Hermann of Reichenau. In fact, in the wiki article of the former, there is the same illustration.--

It's probably the former, given that the person who posted it to the Carinthia article has decent bibliographic information about its origin whereas the article here just says "unknown". --
