Why does such a thing exist ? I link it with ' Harvest Home', Harvest Festival, Thanksgiving, part of the celebration of the completion of harvest. Corn dolly, Harvest wreath etc. I suppose it makes purely logistical sense that the last load of hay from the fields is unlikely to fill the cart, so the reapers could 'hitch a lift' rather than walking home carrying their implements - also to help unload. -- 195.137.93.171 ( talk) 23:31, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
