The naming of Puʻu ʻŌʻō seems to have a different story (C. Heliker, D.A. Swanson, T.J. Takahashi: The Puʻu ʻŌʻō-Kūpaianaha Eruption of Kīlauea Volcano, Hawaiʻi: The First 20 Years. In: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper. 1676, 2003. Online Version). As far as I know, it was not a hill before the vent started growing there. --ThT 16:34, 6 June 2007 (UTC) reply

Modern Methods of Collection

I would beg to differ on type of firearm used for taking this bird. Hunters typically used a shotgun, and two types of ammunition: birdshot with short range powder charge and long range powder charge. Choice between two depended on distance to target.
