this article looks biased. it sounds like his fame was due to his 'bad behaviour', however he was thought to be the best keeper of the world in the 80's.
I'm going to edit this page in hopes to make it a little more neutral. It's written as if it's been proven that this tackle was malicious in intent, and that is not clear at all from the video tape and the ref was right at the spot as it occurred, giving him a great vanatage point.
Is he related to Formula One driver Michael Schumacher? The two have the same surname and they're from the same country. Scott Gall 09:44, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
Nah. Schumacher (Michael) said he played goalkeeper because of his namesake though.
Both involved in controversial inciodents, too.
The birth places of Harald and Michael Schumacher are not far away from each other.(28 km)But if there would be any relationship, except relating to Adam and Eva,the press would have found out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.187.190.42 ( talk) 23:53, 22 September 2007 (UTC)
There exists another Toni Schumacher from which Harald Schumacher had his nickname.Hewas born 1938 in Düren-Rölsdorf,not far from Harald Schumacher and was goalkeeper at the 1.F.C.Köln from 1960-68.But there is no more or less direct relationship between them, because they know each other and aknown relationship would have become popular. The source is the german wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.136.122.52 ( talk) 20:41, 25 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for uploading Image:Toni schumacher.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. "Just before the resulting collision, Schumacher jumped and put his hands in the air and to his left, as if trying to stop the ball, even though the ball already had passed him. He also seemed to oddly twist and contort his legs off to the side of him while mid-flight, resulting in his buttocks actually making the first impact with Battiston"
This is not a neutral description of the incident. It should be changed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.10.46.8 ( talk) 17:00, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
While Schumacher ran for the ball and jumped up to prevent Battiston from lobbing it over his head, Battiston did not hit the ball well, a split second before the collision took place, so instead of lifting it over the goalkeeper Battiston just provided some awkward touch resulting in the ball to go wide. I have watched the scene about 30 times, and I have in fact watched the entire game twice. Both were having a go at the ball at full speed and none of the two players took any caution regarding the actual opponent. Both players must be faulted with the resulting collision at full speed. Schumacher was blamed as while in the air he managed to turn to the left in order to avoid full frontal contact resulting in Battiston being hit by Schumacher's pelvis bone which led to two teeth being lost and unconsciousness on Battiston's side. The real controversy came about as Schumacher did not turn to tend to his fellow sportsman and chose to - seemingly untouched - rather stay away from the scene of the accident. Schumacher later explained his move away from the scene took place because he felt ashamed and at the same time he feared of possibly being attacked by French players because of the violent accident. One has to watch the entire hotly disputed game to understand the mood of aggressiveness many players were in. So, Yes, it was a foul but Battiston actively did not hesitate to go full speed at Schumacher either and therefore exacerbating the ensuing result of the collision. It therefore was no Red Card but judged as a genuine collision by the referee. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.202.3.9 ( talk) 18:32, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
The quote from the New York Times article that Battiston four years later said he wanted 40 meters distance from Schumacher seems strange to me given that many sources claim Schumacher apologized and was even invited to Battiston's wedding.?
