The child singing star Lena Zavaroni was born in Greenock in 1963, I think she should be included in the notable Greenockians paragraph. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.148.33.21 ( talk) 23:39, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

We recently added a link to a new site MyGreenock ( http://www.mygreenock.com ) which offers businesses in the Greenock area free advertising. Can you advise why this was tagged link spam?
There will be no google adsense on this site etc, and all businesses can advertise free.
We (Hobo-Web LTD a greenock based based business) expect to install a forum next week. The directory already has over 300 local businesses in it and it is a useful resource.
I removed the link you added as it was advertising and added nothing to the article, this is an encyclopedia and not a vehicle to advertise your site, you may wish to read the policy on links WP:EL. Fraslet 17:53, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

It's back again, and it's absolutely terrible. You've been asked before not to link spam - it doesn't matter if it's NFP or not, it's still blatantly just advertising. I've removed the link, please don't add it again. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.110.90.75 ( talk) 00:48, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
Infact, it wasn't your link, but "InverclydeNow". Have done similar. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.110.90.75 ( talk) 00:50, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

"pirate Captain Kidd were born in the town"
There's no evidence for this. It's a myth. He was most likely born in Tayside. It needs to be removed, or sourced. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.42.129.123 ( talk) 21:31, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Coming up with accurate etymologies is a technical skills that requires education in certain aspects of professional linguistics and history. I have seen that there are quite a few Wikipedians, but by no means all or the majority, who don't quite get that. William J. Watson, Scotland's greatest professional toponymist and chair of Celtic at Edinburgh, viewed the etymology of Greenock as relatively straightforward, as per the citation in the article. That's the professional's view as it stands. Smith's speculative views on the etymology of Greenock are not informed by professional expertise, if you called him a 'historian' but do not indicate that he is an 'amateur' historian you are materially misleading readers about the value of his views and confusing scholarly etymology with the folk etymology. If you want heart surgery, you want to know the difference between a professional surgeon and a guy who practised on a few dead cows in a barn. While the stakes are not the same, the principle is. I gather from the editing and edit summaries of @Dave souza that he is unhappy diminishing the opinion of R. M. Smith, on the basis that he produced a history of Greenock in the 1920s. I don't really know what to do, I tried different edits to appease him and did not remove Smith's views, even though they could bear no weight as a WP:Reliable source here, but he is still unhappy. 92.1.205.192 ( talk) 18:09, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
