Perhaps, "The Type VIIC submarine was increased in length/size over the Type VIIB because ..." Or "was an enlarged version of the VIIB for x reason" Something like that. Shouldn't be more than a single sentence, though.

Remove the italics from 5th U-boat Flotilla; that name's in English, not German. Same for the 7th
If you're using the same source twice or more in the same paragraph, consolidate them into one entry at the end of the paragraph.
Use an endash between page numbers, not a hyphen, q.v. Gröner.
