An article on a person should be named according to how the person was best known. In this case, that would be George Abell or George O. Abell. Obits from UCLA and NY Times called him "George O. Abell." Google gives
Listings of books by or about Abell on Amazon use the following:
Eliminating duplicates (different editions) and using the name on the book cover where an image is available, the count becomes
