This article is written from a Swedish point of view. In Finland he is mostly considered a national hero, though a very complicated person. He did not want Finland to become a part Russia; he had the admittedly unrealistic objective of making Finland an independent republic, an idea he got in Paris from his friend Benjamin Franklin. He also wrote the first draft for a constitution of Finland.
