Tepper was sponsored here from Austria by the Schiff Family, whose name he adopted. He and his Schiff cousins were all employed initially by the New York Trolley Car Company. Schiff's wife Frances took the child in as her own, avoiding horrible scandal. Artist Richard E. Schiff is Ms Scheff's grandson.
