If FD was born in 1932 and started work at 16, that would have been in 1948, so he cannot have decided "before in 1946...to pursue an ambition to become a champion racing cyclist".

I am intrigued by his surname Huline-Dickens. His grandfather completed the 1911 census using just Huline, no mention of Dickens but his great grandfather used Huline Dickens, not double barrelled. They were consistently Dickens before that. The obits refer to links to the circus family of Huline, but I can't see any such link. I wondered if it was the Huline family wanting to connect to the famous Dickens, rather than the other way round.
