What does the name Franche-Comté mean? Mallerd ( talk) 20:17, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Franche-Comté in French, means "Free County" in English. FrancoisFC ( talk) 04:12, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
To add a little bit more about the meaning of Franche-Comté: The County was producing salt at this time in Salins-les-Bains, Arc-et-Senans and in some other places (We can see the latin root of "sal" in Salins and in Senans). During the Middle-Age, there was a particular tax on salt called the Gabelle, as Franche-Comté people were working in salt mining they were exempted of this tax so the county was free of taxes (at least for salt). If anyone could add this in the article in a better english. Thanks. -- 130.79.35.77 ( talk) 18:36, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
"Free County" is a literal translation of Franche-Comté into English.
But in English we call this region Franche-Comté, the same as the French do.
Can you cite an English language book using "Free County"?
