now abolished

"The most important result of this rule in earlier times was to enable a jury to prevent the infliction of capital punishment for murder (now abolished)."

This sentence makes it sound like capital punishment has been abolished for a conviction of murder. If my understanding is correct, the only thing that is abolished, is the judge being able to decide capital punishment himself.-- 66.102.196.40 ( talk) 16:02, 31 December 2007 (UTC) reply

Nope, capital punishment in France was altogether abolished on Oct. 9 1981. (except perhaps for treason, like in many other countries, but I'm not sure about that). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.130.139.57 ( talk) 19:18, 24 July 2008 (UTC) reply
