Automatic Harness

Was this automatic harnessing common? I read that they could do it remotely in Syracuse, NY as early as 1898 but can't find much about the by-gone contraptions, not even how they worked—would be cool addition if anyone knows more.

The chief operator immediately moves a switch which rings a gong in the chemical fire house and drops the harness on the horses in front of the chemical engine, giving that apparatus about ten seconds advantage over every other. [1]
