The so-called representation of the elegiac couplet's scansion doesn't follow any standard key for such a thing. What the hell are the vertical pipes (|) supposed to mean? I know exactly as much about elegiac couplets after reading this bit as I did before: Nothing.--

The pipes represent boundaries between the metrical feet. The double pipe represents a
caesura. Perhaps the explanation in
Prosody (Latin) would be more to your taste; it's difficult to tell what might satisfy so exacting a critic.
