Was he really promoted to Major General while commanding a brigade, of which he didn't relinquish command until the following year? Timing seems very odd to me.-- Sturmvogel 66 ( talk) 04:55, 10 June 2010 (UTC) reply

It's certainly how it's given in the source. I don't know the specific dates, so it's possible they were only a month or two apart, but it doesn't seem that unusual for the Indian Army of the time. In 1914, the 5th (Mhow) Division had all its brigades commanded by Major-Generals, the 8th Lucknow Division had three, and the 9th (Secunderabad) Division had one - plus an overall commander who was a Lieutenant-General. Perhaps something to do with the size of the units, or the area under command? Some of these brigades were five or six battalions strong... Shimgray | talk | 20:29, 10 June 2010 (UTC) reply
