Here's my thinking - and I'm not sure if it was right. I've been
disambiguating the
links to
Distinguished Service Medal and often I look at the photo of the recipient and see which ribbons they are wearing. That means the appearance of the ribbon is useful information in disambiguating. I agree it's not clearly within
Manual of Style on images, but it seemed useful to me, so I went for it. Sometimes breaking the rules makes sense. Thank you.
