The Detmer Woolen Company is impotant in itself as being a leading business in its field during the Gilded Age of the 19th century. Its founder was also a significant philanthropist who established the Detmar Nurseries near his home in Tarrytown, New York. The buisness maintained offices in the Parker Building, a former home of Metropolitan Life, and an edifice which is important to the study of the history of Manhattan.
