Sentence Does not Make Sense
The last sentence in the third paragraph states:
Although many thought his position an impossible one — trapped between intemperate rioters and an administration far out-of-touch with reality, which often put him forward as its public face — Truman resigned in the aftermath and left Columbia.
This sentence doesn't make any sense; there is no mitigating factor to the "impossible position" that the sentence begins with. Maybe remove although, then modify "Truman resigned..." to "and Truman ultimately resigned in the aftermath, leaving Columbia." I believe this will mantain the thought structure of this sentence. —The preceding

As the original author of that sentence, I this was my notion: if Truman's position really was impossible, then he couldn't fairly be blamed for failure to resolve it -- but he still resigned anyway.
