Are there any sources that say he was ordained an Apostle? The Church Almanac (2004 edition) says that he was set apart as 2nd counselor to Pres. Young, and then sustained as a counselor to teh Twelve Apostles." I don't think that automatically means he was ever really ordained an Apostle. Isaac Crumm 05:47, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
I'll check on this as well, but I don't think this is true. I've read all 7 volumes of History of the Church, and remember reading that the Nauvoo charter was written installing Joseph Smith as Lieutenant General, in part because there were no other Lieutenant Generals in the state of Illinois. Perhaps it was after Smith was killed? Kingsfold ( talk) 13:18, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
