Just making an outline for others wishing to help expand the article stub:
History & "first use" of the term/acronym with source. Focus Enhancements uses it the most, it appears (photos of FS-100 show DTE® Technology). Panasonic P2 system may have been the origin of the workflow concept.
Description of
NLE workflow that led to the technology.
Major video company players & equipment models extant:
Panasonic [P2 system]
Sony [HVR-MRC1, MRU, etc.]
Focus Enhancements [Firestore FS-series]
Aja [KiPro, KiPro Mini]
Advantages over tape:
Non-linear files rather than "real-time" tapes.
Editors & data-jockeys/camera assistants can work quicker.
Disadvantages/drawbacks:
File-transfer bottlenecks due to FireWire & computer bus speeds:
IEEE 1394 (FW-400/i.Link) vs. IEEE 1394b (FW-800)
Although "non-linear", still "takes time" due to large filesizes.
Future of industry direction:
No "
crystal balling", rather current white-papers & future-product announcements/prototypes.
E.G.: Fibre-optic interfaces for increased speed/thru-put on the horizon? Chip-speed limitations?
Visuals:
Typical small form-factor model & storage card/module.
