Crewe appears in the following limerick, which can be found in Roald Dahl's Matilda, though I'm not sure if Dahl is the writer of the limerick or if it was a popular limerick that he incorporated into the book:
An epicure, dining at Crewe,
found quite a large mouse in his stew,
said the waiter, "Don't shout,
and wave it about,
or the rest will be wanting one, too!"
I thought this should probably be mentioned in the article but wasn't sure where to put it. Any input would be welcome. -- Thiebes ( talk) 15:49, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
South Cheshire College is located on Nantwich Rd. Crewe and is the most successful FE college in the UK. On what basis? Cite, please! -- Arwel ( talk) 00:15, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
Well, as I am sure Arwel & other Crewe residents know, South Cheshire College is actually located on Danebank Avenue, which is off Nantwich Road (A354). The college has won a large number of awards, see http://www.s-cheshire.ac.uk/new_scc/spotlight/awards/ for details. South Cheshire College did come top in the 2004 Ofsted report for colleges of further education. This can be found on http://business.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,20135-2054602,00.html
Hope that helps - Shaft121 12:06, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
I've never been to Crewe but I gather that it has a large Polish population, I think the largest in Cheshire. Should this be mentioned? I've added that the RC church has a Polish mass. Ausseagull ( talk) 12:09, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
I don't believe that these articles should be merged. There is enough information on the street to warrant it's own entry - Shaft121 12:14, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
Not sure if the article about Bedford Street is particularly interesting anyway. It does not appear to be a particularly remarkable street. I'd definitley leave it out. -- Alsager boy 12:00, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Agree. Delete, merging any significant details into main Crewe article. Paul W 13:04, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
I merged Bedford Street, Crewe into the Crewe article, and then put the orginal article up for deletion. Looking at it again, I can see no reason why it should crop up in the Crewe article, as it is not particularly notable, and no one has managed to give any reasons why or citations of it to back up the claims about it. So, I've unmerged it, and made that point in the comments for deletion. DDStretch (talk) 15:00, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Shouldent this article mention the Railway Age railway museum. It is after all Crewe's main visitor attraction. G-Man * 13:30, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
I think a project or a sub-project (within the UK geography project) dealing with the whole of Cheshire would be a good idea. I have taken as a precedent the project about Cornwall, which any project dealing with Cheshire could hope to aspire to, since this project has constructed Featured Articles about Cornwall-related things. So, I've listed a proposed project concerning Cheshire on Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals. I think it can easily co-exist with Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography. I would not want to diminish or withdraw from this other project. If you are interested in contributing to this proposed project, please add your name to list at the appropriate place. If you think it might be better placed as a sub-project of the existing UK Geography Project, please say so on that project's talk page, here, and let us discuss it. Many thanks. Could somebodyinclude information on this critically slated (by critics from Crewe anyway) film that showed a fictional day in the life of people from Crewe? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0814092/ - 62.172.185.126 ( talk) 12:43, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
The following is unsourced information:
While this is interesting, we can't use it unless you provide a source. Also, none of this is really trivia, as trivia by its definition is "unimportant information" - it therefore shouldn't be in a trivia section but instead the information should be incorporated into the main article. - Tbsdy lives (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) talk 03:32, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok. I have sourced info about the origins of the name, together with a source for a "riddle" that I was told by my father which refers to the history of its name: "That which is Crewe is not Crewe, and that which is not Crewe is Crewe." (done at the koment from memory) It involves the civil parish of Crewe Green which was, at the time, the paruish of Crewe, and it will also involve material about the origins of the names "Monks Coppenhall" and "Church Copenhall" which were the twin townships of Coppenhall Ancient Parish, which was the location of the original "Crewe Colony", the town of Crewe and the later borough until it started to expand more into adjacent parishes. I'll add it shortly. The history section needs to be worked on a lot, as do all the other sections. DDStretch (talk) 00:46, 18 January 2009 (UTC)
The change of name occured in the 1980s, not exactly sure when. Alsager boy ( talk) 14:40, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
I think the name change happened when the parish boundary change order was made on 1 April 1990. Need to look at the Borough Council minutes Alsager boy ( talk) 14:02, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
I have marked the Economy section as requiring citation. It is also pretty disjointed and confused. I will try to get round to tidying it up. Pixie2000 (talk) 18:30, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
If Crewe is due to get its own town/parish council, it could merit having its own page, as other local councils do. Election results themselves in detail do not belong on this page, and as council candidates have been selected they should be taken to a new page.
