Creaney NunataksGreaney Nunataks – The USGS Source of this page has been updated today, Sep 01 2020 to reflect a name change from Creaney to Greaney on this mountain range to credit the service member noted correctly. I made a Move Request at /info/en/?search=Wikipedia:Requested_moves/Technical_requests#Contested_technical_requests and made edits to the page, but both were denied with no further reason given. Here is another source showing the correct, new name: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/238608/greaney-david-b-jr-daughter/ - There is also a listing here of the roster showing the name - https://books.google.com/books?id=lI3gCwAAQBAJ&pg=PR18&lpg=PR18&dq=david+b+greaney+antarctica&source=bl&ots=_18HKC6lOj&sig=ACfU3U1hkY2xIstsG1-qsVk-YZwvlILItg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjtuPzKmMnrAhUNpZ4KHYJFCQEQ6AEwD3oECAkQAQ#v=onepage&q=david%20b%20greaney%20antarctica&f=false - but again, the main source of the USGS ( https://geonames.usgs.gov/apex/f?p=gnispq:5:::NO::P5_ANTAR_ID:3291) on the page itself already lists the proper name now. Hi @ AntarcticaAndGolf:, is there any reliable source that contains the proposed name Greaney Nunataks? In the USGS both names appear, so it is not clear which one is the main name. Also, all other sources still seem to have the name "Creaney Nunataks". Vpab15 ( talk) 22:03, 10 September 2020 (UTC) reply
@ Vpab15: - There is no official documentation on the USGS site providing "how to read" - however if you look at another example, say https://geonames.usgs.gov/apex/f?p=gnispq:5:::NO::P5_ANTAR_ID:3301, there are two listed features. A search for the top one, "Crescent Stream", brings up results as intended. A search for the bottom name "Blong Gully" yields no similar results. The geonames seem to be listed top to bottom, with top being the newest and updated feature. Other sites I came across seem to be using data from wikipedia rather than official USGS sources so they would not have been updated as such. -- Some more anecdotal evidence would be this article from 2016, which notes "Just ask Dave Greaney, who had Creaney Nunataks named after him.". https://oaea.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Volume16Issue2.pdf -- This amazon review from 2012 notes the misnaming as well as mention in a book about the antarctic travels: https://smile.amazon.com/Antarctica-An-Encyclopedia-2d-ed/product-reviews/0786435909?sa-no-redirect=1. -- This military PDF https://www.history.navy.mil/content/dam/museums/Seabee/Cruisebooks/postwwiicruisebooks/antarctica-cruisebooks/DEEPFREEZE%20III%20TASK%20FORCE%2043%201957-58.pdf also notes something. A search for "Greaney" will show an image of him which can be compared to other linked articles, "Dnld B. Greaney, Jr. AEl, USN, VX-6". However, a search for "Creaney" will note the mistake in the simpler text-only roster sheet for Deep Freeze II, "Creaney, O. B., Jr. --·- AE1, USN" - and "Greaney" is missing from this part of sheet, possibly part of where the misnaming originally happened. AntarcticaAndGolf ( talk) 22:40, 10 September 2020 (UTC) reply
@ AntarcticaAndGolf: thanks for the new links. However, we'll need a reliable source that explicitly mentions "Greaney Nunataks". The link to USGS is definitely compelling, but not enough on its own in my opinion. The amazon review cannot be accepted as a reliable source I am afraid. The article form oaea.net explicitly says "who had Creaney Nunataks named after him", which implies the official name is "Creaney Nunataks". Vpab15 ( talk) 23:02, 10 September 2020 (UTC) reply
