Concerning the revert made on Sep. 19, the prior version had been copied wholesale from the official COGIC website [1]. The source has plenty of good material that could be integrated into the article, however. [Unsigned comment by User:Tijuana Brass]
African-American church. Can someone who knows better track this down for sure? Marskell 12:54, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
First off, the is some missing information: 1) Elder C.P. Jones was the "presiding elder" and "gen'l overseer" of the work and he was the one who expelled Mason and those who agreed with his pentecostal message. Mason reorganized the church in 1907 and gained the right to use the name COGIC in 1920's. C.P. Jones then had to reorganize and rename his church, Church of Christ, Holiness. 2) D.J. Young stayed with C.H. Mason while J.A. Jeter renounced his pentecostal experience. D.J. Young became a bishop in the church and his family opened the first COGIC bookstore. 3) COGIC is governed by a General Board of Bishops when the Gen'l Assembly is not in session (COGIC is episcopal and congregational in gov't, a throw back to it's baptist roots) Bishop Patterson (he doesn't have nor does he refer to himself as Dr) is the presiding bishop of COGIC, an elected 4 yr term (one can be re-elected to office) other Board members include: Bishop Charles E. Blake (West Angeles COGIC), Bishop J.Neaul Haynes (Texas) and others
Second, where is this notion about over-inflating #'s coming from? Can we have some proof?? COGIC is the Largest Black denomination and the largest Pentecostal denomination in North America. COGIC was listed having 3 million in 1972 and had it's population explosion during the 1980's under the leadership of Bishop J.O. Patterson Sr.. The only scam with the black church regarding numbers was the National Baptist Convention under the Leadership of The Rev. Dr. Henry Lyons. He was also convicted and jailed for embezzlement. Using a phone book for number of churches is a poor way to refute a churches' stated membership, much less throw allegations at the leadership without any reference to proof. Bishop L.H.Ford (1990-1995) as presiding bishop made the statement of COGIC's membership being @ the 5 million mark.
For more info on COGIC consider the following books: "Bishop C.H. Mason and the Roots of the Church of God in Christ" by the late Bishop Ithiel Clemmons, Pneumalife Publishing 1996 or "This is the Church of God in Christ" by Dr. Bobby Bean, Underground epics Publishing, 2001

How does the Statement of Faith reprinted verbatim add to the encyclopedic value of the article? Are there salient points that could be summarized out of it that wouldn't be redundant to other discussion of doctrine? Additionally, the source of the statement needs identified. — C.Fred ( talk) 16:33, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
I've recently made substantial changes to the article. Ltwin ( talk) 03:32, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
