I think we need to define the parameters of this article. What sorts of things are included as art? For example, should poetry be included as art? Or is that more in the realm of literature? What about songs? -- Yu Ninjie 09:05, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Although I voted for this article in COTW, I was scratching my head on where to start since "art" really had a very large coverage. This was the article before being nominated to COTW, which was like a redirection page to different aspects of Chinese art. Now the page is like European art history and Japanese Art. That is not a bad idea, but eventually we will need to think of a structure to link articles on different aspects of Chinese Art. We may start discussion since this article will win COTW soon. -- Felix Wan 03:29, 2004 Nov 16 (UTC)
Traditionally, Chinese art primarily consists of music ( Guqin), Go (board game) (called Weiqi in China), Calligraphy, and brush painting. Should this be mentioned somewhere in the text? -- Liuyao 08:12, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)
It seems to me that this article is two broad and needs to be split in two. One about Chinese art (visual arts) and one about literary arts. Though I'm not sure then where film would fit in that kind of scheme.-- Amerinese 06:03, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Do martial arts belong in this article? — J3ff 20:44, 21 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Does anyone have experience getting an appropriate release from a museum to photograph exhibits (with natural light, of course)?
I'm not sure what the Wikipedia requirements are for releases, is there a document I can print out and ask a museum administrator to sign?
The reason I ask is that I live within driving distance of a great many Chinese art displays, and I have some decent photography equipment, but I don't want to waste my time taking a lot of photographs and then finding I can't contribute them.
Any advice will be appreciated. I want to contribute photographs to this article if at all possible.

Image:Sanmaonewspaper1948.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Chinese art gets a large number of page views - about 750 per day, but is rightly classed as "start" class. The much fuller History of Chinese art (B class) gets about half as many views. The Qing dynasty section on this page is very brief, and there is no Qing Dynasty Art page (in contrast to the pretty good Ming Dynasty painting page). Proposal Chinese fine art is a little-viewed collection of sections on historical Chinese art by material or medium. Most are nicely illustrated but have very short texts. Both major art forms and less important decorative ones are covered, the latter usually better than the former. Little has happened on the article since 2012. I propose a merge of the better bits here, where some gaps will be usefully filled. It has had various titles, but the present one doesn't seem a clear or common term. Johnbod ( talk) 13:00, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
I have no strong view on whether they should be merged or not, but I would assume that the the fine art article is meant as a companion article to the folk art article. I would think that traditionally fine art in China is more limited and would not include things like photography (photography as art is a more modern concept), or engraving and embroidery (they are crafts), so the article is somewhat misleading. The Chinese Art article appears to concentrate more on a historical narrative (and on paintings only in some sections). At the moment neither articles are particular satisfactory, the problem as I see it is that Chinese art is a huge subject, and it is difficult to present the subject in a comprehensive way in a single page. Splitting is therefore inevitable, and there is an argument for keeping the fine art article, but it needed to be rewritten or retitled. On the other hand some of the content of the fine art article could be merged here. I think it might be better to consider first what kind of content you want to have on this page because this would be the first page people would visit if they want to know about Chinese art, then think about other related but more specialized articles.
