I believe the original "Champassack" is not the most common transliteration in English. It is certainly not the most commonly used in guides and transliterations in Laos and a basic Google query supports my view. As of 2009-06, an "English only" query yields the following:
As a result, I have moved the article to "Champasak Province". Champasak (town) was already named according to that convention.
