I believe this settlement was founded by Welsh farmers (from Cardigan, Ceredigion) in 1819 (source here), which someone might like to add to the article. The chapel plaque (see pic in source) should be evidence. Is it more likely that these settlers gave it the name Cardigan, rather than the Earl of Cardigan, who died in 1811?
