Might be making an inference here, but Taqwus sounds a lot like Tahquitz... I read a Louis L'Amour novel that is linked in The Lonesome Gods (obviously not an historic account) that described Tahquitz as a trickster that stole the souls of villagers at night while living in the mountains near Agua Caliente Reservation.
