• I don't really see a need to put the commander in the lede
• The Minnesota was not a gunboat
• Comma after North Carolina, Virginia, Nansemond River
• Link gunboat, scuttled on first use, flag of truce boat
• Tell the reader than Rocketts Point is in Richmond
• She had come under Union fire both after and immediately before the attack. awkward regarding chronology
• Rather than say at an unknown time in mid-1864, I'd suggest just saying "in mid-1864"
