Except for the history of the hat in general, everything else comes from Wiki sites.

The article doesn't mention that Stetson’s hat was clearly heavily inspired by the Spanish hats he saw when moved West. Burraron ( talk)
It says that the Boss was waterproof because of it's "tight weave". It also says the hat is made of felt - a cloth that is not woven. Both statements can't be true.
I want to correct this; but I have struggled to come up with suitable language. I believe the hat is waterproof simply because it is a felt hat - my rabbit-felt fedora is waterproof (although I wouldn't try to use it as a bucket).
But I understand that beaver under-fur is curly, and combined with the fact that beavers are aquatic, makes for a felt that is particularly tightly-bound and waterproof.
