Present lead text describes a late August engagement on the Saline River northwest of (new) Fort Hays, whereas the Bob Wilhelm citation's physical description is consistent with the August 2 engagement north of Campbell's Camp ( Victoria, Kansas) and Fort Hays.
In Ups and Downs of an Army Officer, Armes reports two separate engagements on the Saline River:
Several "sources" described the "Battle of the Saline River" as "One of the first battles of the 10th was the Battle of the Saline River. This battle occurred 25 miles northwest of Fort Hays in Kansas near the end of August 1867".
The August 2nd engagement is the earlier action of the 10th 13-15 miles north of Fort Hays. But the August 18th engagement was nearer the "end of August" and was 25 miles (or more) northwest of Fort Hays.
The whole of the article seems consistent with Armes' journal of August 2nd, so I propose change the lead to "This battle occurred on the Saline River north of Fort Hays in Kansas on August 2, 1867." and cite Armes, pages 236-239. The problem is that I know of no more reliable source for dating and locating the battle (e.g., any legitimate U.S. military publication) other than Armes'.
