Are the sources more specific as to what kind of place Hayes Pond was? Was it a settlement, an actual pond, or something else?
Some sources call it a "swamp", and it is indeed swampy (I went once). Found a DOT document that describes it as a former mill pond and added. There was once a dam that retained the water there but it washed out a few years ago.
