Is it really correct to refer to these ships as "DD-xx" when they were all decommissioned before the "DD" hull classification symbol came into use in 1920?

Yes, the classification symbols were retroactive, the US Navy uses DD to refer to these ships,
[1]. At the beginning of each ship article the vessel is referred to by its anachronistic name.
