Assessment

No "Assessment" section yet. The problem is that there wasn't much contemporary analysis on Ayrshire. He was never the "big horse" of his day: that role was filled by the likes of Friar's Balsam, Minting and Donovan. On the other hand obviously "bad" Derby winners were identified as such, especially if, like Merry Hampton, they had an unpopular owner. Derby winners like Ayrshire, who were in the "good, not great" category, didn't seem to generate the same column inches. Something may turn up.
